In four other places the conduit was damaged to some extent but not sufficient to materially affect the flow of water.

In every case the dainage was caused by landslips from the higher levels, I calculate that during the 48 hours upwards of 30,000 cube yards of earth were precipitated on to the conduit a large pro- portion of this was of course carried down by the rain into the valleys and ravines below.

The Tytam Reservoir.---The Tytam Reservoir works suffered some damage but not of a very serious character. The invert of the flood water channel immediately below the byewash was carried away and the slopes on the south west of the main embankment suffered a carrying away a portion of the retaining wall together with

good deal one landslip side about 100 feet of retaining wall was carried away. The small reservoirs at Wong-nei-chung and feet of iron railing. On the south east the Mint were filled up with sand and in a few cases the water mains in the streets were broken and the water supply to the houses interrupted.

Preliminary Works.

Immediately on ascertaining the damage at the Service Reservoir the water from Tytam was turned off and steps were taken to clear the 16-foot culvert make good the breech in the Garden Road main and turn the streams on the hill side into the condnit. 16 foot culvert cleared sufficiently to admit of the free discharge of the water coming down the Albany Water was supplied to the City and the Nullah on the following Tuesday, June the 3rd.

The debris was cleared away where the breeches in the conduit had occurred and wooden shoots were fitted up and the Tytam work again supplied to the City on the following Friday, June 7th.

Urgent Permanent Work.

Workmen are now engaged in making good the conduit and removing the debris from the Bowen Road. Contracts based on a schedule of prices having been entered into subject to your approval with TSANG KENG for this work. The total cost of this work is estimated at $7,300.

Permanent Work.

The Permament Work of a less urgent character includes the restoration of the Service Reservoir, and contingent works practically to the same condition as before the storin. the southern embankment to a height of 6 feet from the bottom so as to render the dam stable without I propose to strengthen the aid of the earth backing. The total cost of this work I estimated at $27,000 I submit specification and schedule of prices tendered by TSANG KENG for your approval.

The necessary works at the Tytam Reservoir are the repairing of the flood water channel, the restoration of the slopes retaining walls and iron railing I propose to raise the retaining wall on the south west side of the main dam so as to flaten the slope above. These works I estimated at $5,000.

Preliminary works of urgent character,.

PUBLIC WORKS' DEPARTMENT,

26th June, 1889.

I have the honour to forward you the following report on the damage done to the roads outside the City of Victoria by the rainstorm of the 29th and 30th of May last.

In order to render the description as clear as possible I will commence at the western extremity of the City and traverse the roads in a southerly direction through Pokfulam, Aberdeen, Stanley, from Stanley go North through Taitam to Shaukiwan and from Shaukiwan to Wong-nei chung entering the City again at its Eastern extremity. After this I will traverse the several hill roads and their bran- Ches in the order in which they are passed in the main traverse just described.

The spandrel and parapet walls together with the filling in over the arch of No. 10 bridge were carried away, the arch stones and abutments only remaining, this has occurred before, the bridge should be lengthened by the addition of another arch estimated cost $800. A bamboo bridge has been erected to provide temporarily for the traffic.

Considerable damage has been done to the side walls between 10 and 11 bridge about 250 cubic yards of new walling requires to be done. Estimated cost $750. Some 2000 cubic yards of the road- way washed away East of No. 10 bridge through the waterway under the bridge being insufficient, this has been replaced and the road made passable.

Immediately to the west of No 11 bridge the road is carried on an embankment about 75 feet of which has been carried. Estimated cost of repairs $150. A temporary bamboo bridge has been

erected.

The apron of No. 1i bridge has partially destroyed and the remaining portion undermined. Estimated cost of repairs $200.

A culvert also requires to be constructed between 10 and 11 bridges 4.′ 0′′ × 3. 0." Estimated cost $100.
